Yan Lei (b. 1965, Hebei, China. Lives and works in Beijing) graduated from the China Academy of Art (Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts) in 1991. In 2002, he was awarded the Chinese Contemporary Art Award for Best Artist. His practice spans a variety of media, including performance, photography, painting, sculpture, and installation, and has always focused on ridiculing and questioning the role of the artist, creativity and the power structures of the contemporary art world.
